A new experimental method is presented to investigate directly the far-infrared frequency dependence of the Josephson ac current amplitude near the superconducting gap. The lowest value of the damping factor delta of the Riedel singularity in niobium contacts at 4 K is found to be delta = (2/sup +2//sub -/1) x 10/sup -3/ and is attributed to quasiparticle damping.
