Environmental awareness in the year 2000

Journal Article · · J. Environ. Educ.; (United States)
Fundamental characteristics of the 20th century responsible for shaping a new environmental awareness are discussed. This new awareness is different from earlier environmental awareness because it takes into account longer time periods than were considered in the past when predicting the future quality of the earth's environment. A sound environment in the year 2000 will depend on a restructuring of the balance between population growth and resource use and increased conservation through continued environmental education. Traditional fossil fuel consumption will decrease, and unconventional energy resources, such as solar energy, will be developed. (1 graph, 14 references)
