Broadening the scope of microcomputer numeric applications with the 8087 numeric processor extension

Book ·
OSTI ID:5179098
The Intel 8087 numeric processor extension will broaden the scope and capabilities of numeric intensive products. The performance of the 8087 hardware lends itself well to the types of applications that in the past were bound to expensive minicomputer or mainframe numerics implementations. The 8087 is extremely easy-to-use because of the unique coprocessor interface to either the Iapx 86 or Iapx 88 CPUs. The wide range of software support, including Pascal and Fortran, makes programming the Iapx 86/20 or 88/20 in high level languages a vehicle for higher performance, competitive products. The author describes the 8087 configuration, instruction set and coprocessor mechanisms. 7 references.
