Method and apparatus for gravel-packing a well

A system is described for gravel-packing spaced zones of a well comprising: a liner string including: a liner hanger means for hanging the liner string within a well bore; a production screen means for each of the zones; a selectively openable valve means located above each of the production screen means, for directing gravel laden slurry to a well annulus between the well bore and the liner string; and zone isolation packer means for sealing the well annulus between successive zones; an operating string including: an outer tubing string; a liner hanger setting tool connected to a lower end of the outer tubing string and having a housing means with a lower end detachably connected to the liner hanger means; an isolation gravel packer, located in the operating string below the liner hanger setting means and concentrically received within the liner string, the gravel packer including a stinger receptacle, a gravel laden slurry passage means for communicating the stinger receptacle with a selected one of the valve means of the liner string, and a return fluid passage means isolated from the gravel-laden slurry passage means and communicated with the bore of the outer tubing string; and positioner means for opening and closing the valve means of the liner string in response to reciprocation of the operating string within the liner string; and a concentric inner tubing string, adapted to be received through the ball valve bore when the ball valve is in its open position, and having a lower stinger adapted to be stabbed into and sealingly received in the stinger receptacle of the isolation gravel packer.
