EPA prepares to rescind NESHAP standards for uranium mill tailings disposal sites

Radon emissions from disposal sites for uranium and thorium mill tailings currently are regulated under two federal statutes and are overseen by two federal agencies. EPA is responsible for promulgating radon emission regulations under both the CAA and the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is responsible for implementing UMTRCA regulations by licensing uranium and thorium mills and promulgating specific rules based on UMTRCA regulations. EPA has agreed to take the steps necessary to eliminate redundancies between the two sets of regulations.
