Foam suppression of respirable coal dust. Final report

The suppression of respirable coal dust by foam was investigated and a suitable foam formulation was developed after evaluating 40 surfactants for their ability to wet coal. A laboratory model, including a boring machine as coal dust generator, was installed to determine dust reduction under various conditions. It was found that when foam was applied directly to the point of dust formation, over 90% of the respirable dust could be suppressed (initial coal dust concentrations were 350 and 2500 million particles per cubic meter).
