This article examines corrective actions being taken by the Tennessee Valley Authority to minimize stresses developing in Hiwassee Dam due to concrete growth from alkali-aggregate reaction. The topics of the article include a description of the problem, corrective actions taken to reduce stress, continuous monitoring, post-tensioning, cutting the slots, abutment slots, and adjustments to spillway gates.
