Muonic isomer shift of the first excited 2/sup +/ state in /sup 204/Pb

Evidence of the excitation of the 899-keV 2/sup +/ state in muonic /sup 204/Pb has been obtained. The isomer shift of the nuclear E2 ground-state transition is found to be -1.98 +- 0.16 keV, a value that is in disagreement with interpretation of the first excited state as a volume-conserving one-phonon quadrupole vibration.
