The dual-duct system under evaluation is one of several HVAC systems that serve the head-quarters building of Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. The building is a 13-story, 150,000 sq ft office building that was initially constructed in 1929 and added to in 1960. At the time of the addition, new HVAC systems for the entire building were installed. The two main HVAC systems serve the second through ninth floors while the tenth floor, first floor, and basement are served by separate, smaller systems. Floors 11 and 13 are used for mechanical and electrical equipment. One of the main HVAC systems is a 30,000 cfm, high-pressure primary air system. It supplies conditioned air to the perimeter of the building through induction units. The other main HVAC system, a 100,000 cfm, medium-pressure dual-duct unit, supplies air to the core of the building through mixing boxes. The segregation of core and perimeter spaces proved to be a major benefit that will be discussed later. While changes were made to several systems in the building, this article will focus on the dual-duct system.
