This article examines how the local air-quality management office is getting first-hand experience with a variety of low-emission concepts. Originally established in 1946, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has the responsibility for implementing resolutions of the federal and state Clean Air Acts. In 1987, the District`s governing board established the Technology Advancement (TA) Office to support development of advanced emission-control technologies and cleaner fuels. The topics of the article include transit bus methanol retrofits, cryogenic transportation refrigeration system, alternative-fuel vehicles, electric vehicles, and fuel cells.
