A continuous process of vaporizing the volatile constituents of oil shales and oil sands is described comprising heating such material during passage through a practically gas-tight mechanically-rabbled furnace by contact with practically non-oxidizing gases heated to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the volatile constituents. The gases carrying the volatile constituents are removed from the furnace in continuous flow and the condensible volatile constituents are condensed from the gases. The fixed gases are reheated to a sufficient temperature to cause vaporization of the volatile constituents from the material passing through the furnace.
