Formaldehyde has been detected directly towards Sgr A West in the 2 mm, J = 2/sub 12/ - 1/sub 11/ emission line with a 1' resolution. The formaldehyde is located near the galactic center in a molecular belt which contains two major concentrations with radial velocities of +50 and +15 km s/sup em-dash1/, respectively, and which displays a mean velocity gradient of 6.7 km s/sup -1/ in the same sense as that of galactic rotation. The continuum radio source Sgr A East is probably on the near side of the molecular region, while Sgr A West appears to be on the far side implying that the molecular region has a velocity component directed in towards the galactic center.
