Polycyclic aromatic compounds containing both oxygen and nitrogen heteroatoms (specifically the hydroxylated nitrogen heterocycles) in a solvent-refined coal liquid were separated by use of a two-step column absorption chromatographic method on neutral alumina and silicic acid and were identified and quantified by capillary column gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Among the numerous isomers detected, a number of compounds were positively identified for the first time in coal liquids by comparison of the retention data with available and newly synthesized standard compounds. Hydroxylated indoles, quinolines, carbazoles, and acridines predominated among the compound types found in this sample. 23 references, 3 figures, 2 tables.
