Temperature stratification in hot water solar thermal storage tanks

Conference · · AIAA Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5168208
The overall efficiency of solar domestic hot water systems using liquid sensible heat storage can be enhanced by temperature stratification in the storage tank. An experimental apparatus was designed to study how the storage tank stratified for three different hot water load schedules, three solar inputs, three flow rates, and two inlet configurations. Criteria were developed to evaluate the effect of these variables on temperature stratification in the preheat tank. A hot water load schedule and the ratio of flow rates in the collector-heat exchanger and heat exchanger-storage loops were selected using these criteria. A novel hot water load schedule was designed which will provide the greatest degree of temperature stratification.
