An affordable integrated solar home - one that integrates passive solar architecture, solar hot water, energy efficiency and photovoltaics - may be more accessible in the future. Driven by utility participation, better and cheaper solar technologies and highly integrated products and services, advanced solar homes are coming within reach of more and more homebuyers with limited resources. Photovoltaic (PV) systems to supply a home's electrical needs, in particular, have become much more practical in recent years. This article describes the design of a PV home that can be factory-built, and the cooperative programs of DOE, utilities, research organizations, and builders to bring it to market.
