In December 1992, several major changes were completed on the exhaust systems at Almaden Research Center (ARC). The desired result of these changes was to redesign the system to reduce the exhaust volume and ultimately reduce the overall energy consumption. The most significant of these changes was the modification of 120 laboratory fume hoods from constant volume type hoods to variable air volume (VAV) types. The conversion to VAV hood exhaust cut fan horsepower 32 percent. The article begins with a brief description of the system, followed by the technical and financial justification, the technical accomplishments, and ends with a discussion of the actual results.
