The isomerization of low octane normal C{sub 5}/C{sub 6} paraffins has been well known for years as a reaction which finds important application in the octane improvement processes used in the manufacture of gasoline. C{sub 5}/C{sub 6} paraffins isomerization is generally equilibrium limited in current catalytic systems. This equilibrium is a function of temperature with the iso- to normal-paraffins ratio becoming more favorable with decreasing temperature. Therefore, research and development of the isomerization process has been aimed for years at decreasing the reaction temperature. It has been reported recently that ZrO{sub 2}, TiO{sub 2} and Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} exhibited super acidity on treatment with sulfuric acid and these solid superacids showed catalytic activities for diversified acid-catalyzed reactions at low temperature range. The acid strengths of these solid superacids were estimated to be H{sub O} {<=} {minus}14.52. Especially, that of ZrO{sub 2} treated with sulfate ion (SO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}}/ZrO{sub 2}) was estimated to be H{sub O} {<=}{minus}16.4. The authors have tried to apply SO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}}/ZrO{sub 2} for the low temperature isomerization of C{sub 5}/C{sub 6} paraffins and found that the activity duration of SO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}}/ZrO{sub 2} was greatly improved by loading a small amount of Pt. Concerning this improved catalyst (Pt/SO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}}/ZrO{sub 2}), the influence of the preparation method on physical and acidic properties and activity of the catalyst has been investigated. Further, the long term stability of the present catalyst was studied with a fixed-bed flow reactor using light straight-run naphtha as feedstock.
