Removal or retention of unmerchantable saplings in Allegheny hardwoods: effect on regeneration after clearcutting
Merchantable trees in an old growth stand (mainly beech, (Fagus grandifolia) and supar maple) in NW Pennsylvania were clear felled in September and October 1937, and 4 plots set up containing (a) large (d.b.h. over 1.5 inch), and small residual saplings, (b) primarily small residuals (1-inch d.b.h.) and (c) plots as (a) and (b) but with saplings over 0.5 inch d.b.h. chopped down (moved) in April and May 1938. Plots were tallied in 1938 after mowing, and in 1942, 1947, 1957 and 1972. After 35 years, the 2 mowed plots (c) were dominated by fast-growing, shade-intolerant black cherry (Prunus serotina) which accounted for 65% of the b.a. The plot with treatment (a) had fewer, larger trees with some sawtimber size maple and beech. Cherry accounted for 32% b.a. The plot with treatment (b) had trees intermediate in size and composition (cherry 53% b.a.). (Refs. 10).
