This paper presents the results of a laboratory study regarding the effect of the gradient of the in situ horizontal stress acting as a barrier in limiting the height of a hydraulically created vertical fracture. Stress gradient and fractures were created as specified, and the heights of the resulting fractures measured photographically. A twodimensional analysis was used to predict the extent of crack development (height), first by a finite element method, second by a semianalytical approach based on linear elasticity. The proposed experimental approach permits quantitative results to be obtained.
