Topological study of SU(N) magnetic monopoles

The magnetic symmetry introduced by Y. M. Cho is reinterpreted from a topological point of view. Generalized SU(N) magnetic-monopole solutions under the magnetic symmetry are described by the magnetic-monopole field M/sub ..mu../. It is shown that for nontrivial Higgs field directions M/sub ..mu../ describes the well-known Dirac magnetic-monopole potentials. M/sub ..mu../ is also used to obtain magnetic-monopole solutions even without the magnetic symmetry. It is the natural topological generalization for SU(N) gauge groups of the SU(2) hedgehog solution.
