Pion absorption in the helium isotopes

We have measured the reactions /sup 3/ /sup 4/He(..pi..-,n)/sup 2/ /sup 3/H at pion energies T/sub ..pi../ = 285 to 575 MeV, above the (3,3) resonance, using the high energy pion channel (P/sup 3/) at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). The recoil deuterons and tritons were identified by time-of-flight (TOF), energy loss (..delta..E), and total energy (E). Differential cross-sections were extracted for the angular range theta/sub n/ = 18/sup 0/ to 134/sup 0/ in the center-of-momentum frame, as well as integrated forward cross-sections. The data exhibit a strong variation with pion energy, T..pi.., and momentum transfer, q. The results are interpreted within the framework of various models.
