Near-Surface Test Facility Phase 1 tests rock mass thermal property determinations

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5162909

This report presents a summary of the pre-test characterization of intact basalt thermal properties and post-test analyses to establish basalt rock mass thermal properties from Full-Scale Heater Test No. 2 and the Jointed Block Test experimental observations in Pomona basalt at the Near-Surface Test Facility (NSTF). It was concluded that thermal conductivity and heat capacity, averaged over the range of temperatures and stresses encountered in the tests, may be accurately determined from the full-scale field tests conducted at the NSTF. These rock mass thermal properties have been used in the subsequent thermomechanical analysis of the Near-Surface Test Facility Full- Scale Heater tests. 23 refs., 26 figs., 8 tabs.
