Paulownia tomentosa: effects of fertilization and coppicing in plantation establishment

Journal Article · · South. J. Appl. For.; (United States)

Ten fertilizer treatments were applied in March, 1980 to 400 field planted, container grown Paulownia tomentosa seedlings in Maryland: no treatment; fritted micronutrients at 768 lb/acre; or granular fertilizer (N:P2O5:K2O) 20:20:20 or 25:10:10 at 100, 200, 400 or 800 lb/acre. Survival, height and diameter were measured after one season. Seedlings were coppiced in Autumn, 1980 or Spring, 1981, and thinned to leave one dominant shoot per plant. All plants were harvested in Autumn, 1981. Growth was significantly increased by several fertilizer treatments during the first year, but only by 25:10:10 fertilizer at 800 lb/acre during the second. There was n.s.d. in growth due to different coppicing treatment. It is recommended that seedlings be treated with 25:10:10 fertilizer at 800 lb/acre at the time of establishment, and then coppiced in early spring the following year.
