A method is described of forming a calcined zeolite containing catalyst, which comprises treating the zeolite, having exhangeable sites, with a source of a Group IB metal cation in an amount sufficient to insure that at least 10 percent of the exhangeable sites are Group IB metal cation exchanged; forming a composite of the exchanged zeolite with a clay matrixing material, in which the zeolite does not exceed about 50 percent by weight of the composite; and calcining the composite at a temperature above 600/sup 0/C, whereby the alpha value of the composite after calcination is greater than that of a calcined mixture of the clay matrixing material and the zeolite.
