Remote sensing is defined by the American Geological Institute's Glossary of Geology as The collection of information about an object by a recording device that is not in physical contact with it. The term is usually restricted to mean methods that record reflected or radiated electromagnetic energy, rather than methods that involve significant penetration into the Earth. The technique employs such devices as the camera, infrared detectors, microwave frequency receivers, and radar systems. Aerial photographs were the first remotely sensed data sensing the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Because photogeology and photogeomorphology have been widely used for many years with great success in petroleum exploration, we included papers on these subjects in this volume. This volume begins with a series of general papers chosen to cover most aspects of remote sensing. These are followed by papers on thermal infrared imagery and on radar. Finally, several papers present case histories illustrating the use of remote sensing in geologic interpretation and petroleum exploration.
