Journal Article · · W.Va., Univ. Agric. Exp. Stn., Bull.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5159657
Of 123 companies that replied to a questionnaire in 1983, 24 air dried lumber, 26 operated drying kilns and one was constructing kilns. A solar kiln was also operating, Only 15-17% of lumber production was kiln dried in the state. Most kilns were steam-heated, though newer units often used dehumidifiers and had increased automation. Wood waste was used as primary or secondary fuel by 57% of the mills employing conventional kiln drying. Managers were more interested in research relating to present drying practices than in new drying methods or utilization of low value species. 16 references.
