This article attempts to determine the influence of the nature of a cation on the capacitance (C) of an electrical double layer. Measurements of the capacitance of the electrical double layer on platinum and palladium electrodes in acetonitrile solutions with the use of a technique for renewing the electrode surfaces under the working solution have made it possible to detect a capacitance minimum, which corresponds to the maximum diffuseness of the electrical double layer. The potentials E are given relative to a silver reference electrode in a 0.1 M silver nitrate solution in acetonitrile. Measurements of the C vs. E curves of a renewed palladium electrode in acetonitrile solutions of NaClO/sub 4/ and NaClO/sub 4/ + LiClO/sub 4/ mixtures of different composition were performed. A capacitance minimum is observed for the palladium electrode in a dilute NaClO/sub 4/ solution, although it is suppressed in comparison to an LiClO/sub 4/ solution.
