A new method for the spectrofluorimetric determination of aluminum with 1,2,4-trihydroxyanthraquinone in a mixed 70:30 (v/v) acetone/water medium of apparent pH 3.5 provided by a chloroacetic/monochloroacetate buffer is reported. The method allows the determination of aluminum over the range 20-65 ng/ml and features a detection limit of 0.27 ng/ml. It was applied to the determination of the metal in blood serum, where it provided results consistent with those obtained by graphite-chamber atomic absorption spectrometry. The effect of major interferences with the method is commented on.
