This patent describes an aqueous-based polymeric composition capable of forming a gel under subterranean formation conditions, it comprises: water; a viscosifying amount of a water dispersible polymer; and a crosslinking agent in an amount effective to cause gelation of the aqueous solution of the water-dispersible polymer it also comprises a mixture of an aldehyde and a member selected from the group consisting of phenolic esters, naphtholic esters, halogenated phenolic esters and halogenated naphtholic esters.
