Differential actuating system for downhole tools

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5157740

This patent describes a downhole tool apparatus for use in a well having a well bore and a tubing string suspended within the well bore so that a well annulus is defined between the well bore and the tubing string. It comprises a power piston having first and second sides; and operating valve means having a first portion for selectively communicating annulus pressure from the well annulus with the first side of the power piston and simultaneously communicating the second side of the power piston with a zone of the well isolated from the annulus pressure so that a pressure differential between the well annulus and the zone moves the power piston in a first direction, and having a second position for subsequently communicating the annulus pressure with the second side of the power piston and simultaneously communicating the first side of the power piston with the zone so that the pressure differential between the well annulus and the zone moves the power piston in a second direction opposite the first direction.
