Effect of SiC arrester leads on surge protection of motors

Journal Article · · Int. J. Energy Syst.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5157034
The authors investigated the effect of lead length on the ability of SiC surge arresters to protect the insulation of large ac motor windings from electrical breakdown due to switching surges. A computer simulation of the system using the Electromagnetic Transients Program was developed that incorporates models for the leads, surge arrester, and motor windings. The study shows that arrester effectiveness is somewhat reduced when connection is via long leads. 6 references, 6 figures.
