Tubing end locating apparatus for wellbores

This patent describes a method for determining the location of a reference point on a tubing string with respect to a reference point on a pipe string disposed in a wellbore, which tubing string is insertable within the pipe string. It comprises providing the tubing string including means for conducting pressure fluid through the tubing string; providing an apparatus connected to the tubing string, the apparatus comprising a body member including passage means formed therein for receiving pressure fluid from the tubing string and port means in communication with the passage means for conducting pressure fluid therethrough, a closure member disposed on the apparatus and movable between a first position and a second position to substantially close off flow of pressure fluid through the port means, and means connected to the apparatus and engageable with a surface on the pipe string to hold the closure member in one of the positions, the closure member being movable to the other of the positions in response to the apparatus moving past the reference point on the pipe string to effect a change in fluid flow through the tubing string; providing means for sensing the change in fluid flow through the tubing string; inserting the tubing string and the apparatus within the pipe string and moving the apparatus through the pipe string while monitoring the means for sensing; and determining the location of the apparatus within the pipe string in response to sensing the change of fluid flow in the tubing string in response to the closure member moving to the other position.
