Orinoco oil belt evaluation and exploitation

Conference · · Alternative Energy Sources; (United States)
OSTI ID:5153773
The Orinoco Oil Belt is considered one of the largest accumulations of heavy and extra-heavy crudes in the world. Considering the lower cost of exploitation compared to the development of tar sands and shale oils or other source of energy, the Belt will probably become a major supplier of crude in the long run. Petroleos de Venezuela started in 1979 an intensive research programme of methods and technologies of production, upgrading and processing of these crudes, as well as oriented exploration, to quantify by 1983 the hydrocarbon resources and determine the most attractive areas for exploitation. Presently planning is being rushed for the first two projects with the purpose of producing 125,000 BPD of upgraded crude and 100,000 BPD of non-upgraded crude by 1988. Both projects will utilize proved technologies and companies of large experience for their designs, construction and management. Long-term plans indicate for the year 2000 a probable production capacity of 1 MMBPD.
