One thousand seventy-nine (1,079) Los Angeles boys and girls in the second and fifth grades had significantly lower baseline values for forced expiratory volume in 1 sec ({minus}6%) and mid-expiratory flow ({minus}17%) measured in February to May 1984 than did 1,805 Houston children measured in October to December 1976. These intercity differences were consistent in Mexican-Americans, Whites, and Blacks. Although bronchodilator, metaproterenol aerosol improved airflows of Los Angeles children about 5%, airflow was still below the height and ethnic group standardized Houston values. The most likely explanation of these differences is virtually continuous exposure to air pollution in Los Angeles.
