Industry spokesmen forecast an increase of 10-15% in Western Canada drilling activity during 1980 with well completions reaching 8000-8200 for the year. Well completions in Western Canada in 1979 totaled 7239, compared with 6792 in 1978. Areas of greatest activity during 1980 will include the Elmworth-Deep basin gas area stretching from northwestern Alberta into northeastern British Columbia; the West Pembina oil play, where first discoveries were announced in 1977; continuing emphasis on deep gas tests in the Foothills region by majors; and shallow gas and deeper oil exploration and development drilling in the Medicine Hat region and Suffield Block in southeastern Alberta. The Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors expects the drilling-rig inventory to reach 520 rigs during 1980, with almost full utilization during the winter drilling season.
