The Southern California Air Quality Management district (AQMD) has approved Sohio's $500 million, 500,000 bbl/day Long Beach, Calif., terminal provided that Sohio removes 1.2 lb of pollutants for every pound created, and 7.2 lb of hydrocarbon or organic emissions per pound created. This requirement may cost an additional $125 million and will bring about the daily removal of 6795 lb of sulfur oxides, 7125 lb of nitrogen oxides, 6120 lb of hydrocarbon gases, and 1100 lb of particulates, which includes pollution resulting from the generation of additional electricity by Southern California Edison Co. for operation of the terminal. Without the latter requirement, the pollution control costs would have been $75 million. The most costly of the projects submitted by Sohio to meet the AQMD requirements will be a five-stage line scrubber at Southern California Edisons oil-fired Alamitos powerplant.
