Toward a theory of the acquisition of computer-aided technologies via computer-simulation modeling

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5151950

Developments in computer-aided technologies to design, engineer, manufacture, market, and service products have created powerful incentives for companies to adopt these technologies. These pressures stem from the ability of competitors who have employed the technologies to develop and produce more timely, less costly, and higher quality products. The goal of the dissertation work is to develop a theory of the acquisition of computer-aided technologies. The work is motivated by the desire to provide guidance to managers and engineers to help insure successful computer-aided technology acquisitions. Computer simulation modeling is used as the theory development vehicle. The computer-simulation models are a set of nonlinear differential and algebraic equations whose structures are obtained by abstracting the relevant causal relationships from the literature. The numerical solution, a time history of the parameters, is obtained using the Euler or Runge-Kutta integration scheme. The acquisition of the technology can go awry in a number of ways. Three models are developed for specific aspects of the acquisition.
