Low-mass star and planet formation is reviewed through a brief comparison of the results of cosmogonical models with observations ranging from studies of star-forming regions to searches for planetary companions to low-mass stars. Five key phases are described, starting from the dense, interstellar cloud cores that form low-mass stars, through the protostellar collapse and fragmentation phase, to the formation of a protostellar object accreting gas from the surrounding protostellar disk and cloud envelope. Descriptions are given for the phase where planets are formed in the protostellar disk, and the dissipation of the bulk of the protostellar disk and the appearance of an optically visible, premain-sequence star. 149 refs.
