Alcohol fuels - performance, emissions and the environment

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5150595
The lower alcohols, methanol and ethanol, were considered as supplements or replacements for petroleum-based fuels. The alcohols are shown to increase power and thermal efficiency over gasoline while reducing oxides of nitrogen emissions. Some of the problems of pure alcohol usage are also discussed, such as: aldehyde emissions, cold start-up and driveability, and engine wear. A brief discussion of alcohol-gasoline blends is also included. 18 refs.
