Review of operating experience on reactor trip systems

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5150394
Operating experience with the Reactor Trip System (RTS), as reported in Licensee Event Reports (LERs), the Nuclear Power Experiences (NPE) data base, and selected plant records, is presented. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential significance of aging, including cycling, trips, and testing as contributors to degradation of the RTS. Tables are presented that show the percentage of failure events classified by component, subcomponent, and cause for each of the Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) vendors. A representative reactor trip string and reactor coolant pressure channel were selected for detailed study. Functional indicators of degradation and testing requirements are evaluated.
