Geotechnical evaluation of the support of coal pillars in underground coal mines

Journal Article · · Bull. Assoc. Eng. Geol.; (United States)

The study described was accomplished through an investigation of both the intact and insitu geotechnical properties of the subcoal strata and through the installation of floor movement monitoring instrumentation. The method of bearing capacity analysis developed by A.S. Vesic was used to define pillar stability. This method includes provisions for taking into consideration a two-layer system such as assumed for mine conditions where a weak underclay overlies firmer strata. 4 refs.
