Advances in BWR pipe replacement technology

Approximately ten operating boiling water reactors (BWRs) have replaced major parts of the recirculation system piping and/or have completed major modifications to the reactor vessel nozzles. These repairs were necessary due to the intergranular stress corrosion cracking phenomenon in pipe welded joints. This paper discusses the advances in several technologies that have contributed to the industry's ability to successfully, from an as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) standpoint, complete these modifications.
