Different methods have been applied to investigate a system consisting of a petroleum sulfonate, an alcohol, a hydrocarbon, and an aqueous electrolyte solution. The point of optimum salinity can be found by using not only the laborious measurement of low interfacial tensions, but also by using the simpler solubilization and densimetric methods. With increasing hydrophilicity of the alcohol or chain length of the hydrocarbon molecule the interval with regard to the electrolyte concentration increases in which a middle phase exists and its volume fraction decreases at the point of optimum salinity. The preparation of microemulsion systems with given properties by using alcohols and hydrocarbons with alkene chains of different length has been demonstrated.
