Resume of oil, gas, and geothermal field operations in 1972
The production of oil for the year 1972 was 324,452,625 bbl, a decrease of 0.9% compared to 1971. Net gas production was 542,845,308 Mcf, a decline of 7.9% compared to the previous year. California proven oil reserves (excluding federal offshore) as of Jan. 1, 1973, were 4.78 billion bbl, a decline from the 5.10-billion bbl reserve on Jan. 1, 1972. California's offshore area contains the best future potential for new reserves of oil and gas, but the future of recovering that oil is in question at a time when the nation is facing a serious shortage of energy. Exploratory drilling during the year resulted in the discovery of 2 new fields in Yolo County, and one each in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Joaquin counties, 6 new field extensions, and 2 new pools. Two abandoned fields were reactivated during the year.
