Examples are presented which illustrate the theory that in a radical cation containing two equivalent oxygen atoms separated by a bridging methylene group, the spin is delocalized in a three-centered (-O-CH/sub 2/-O-) ..pi.. orbital. The radicals were generated by ..gamma.. radiation of solid solutions of 1,3-dioxacyclopentane, 1,3-dioxacyclohexane, s-trioxane, 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran, and dimethoxymethane in a Freon matrix. The reaction mechanism for radical production is positive charge transfer from the solvent to the solute. The ESR spectra of the radical cations are presented and discussed in some detail. (BLM)
