Permian and lower Triassic transition from the shelf to basin (Grand Canyon, Arizona to Spring Mountains, Nevada)

Conference · · Four Corners Geol. Soc., Four Corners Field Conf., Guideb.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5145551

Permian sedimentary rocks of the Grand Canyon area and northerly to Utah are marine, mixed marine-nonmarine, and nonmarine; whereas, those of Early Triassic age are dominantly nonmarine. Both successions thicken and become progressively more marine toward the west; this is a reflection of the shelf-to-basin facies change. Included in the few thousands of feet of sedimentary rocks are thin conglomerates, various sandstone types, much silt-stone and shale, numerous limestone and dolostone types characterize the marine units, and gypsum is associated with restricted environment dolomicrite and micrite. The succession of Permian and Lower Triassic sediments accumulated under environmental conditions that varied from eolian, fluvial (particularly floodplain), paludal, mixed nonmarine-marine (particularly deltaic), tidal-flat (including evaporite accumulations), restricted marine, to open marine. Oil is produced in limited quantities from the Timpoweap Member of the Moenkopi Formation in the Virgin oil field (oldest in Utah, having been developed in 1907), and from the Permian Kaibab Formation farther northeast in the Upper Valley field.
