Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling, its violation, and the structure of hadrons
We revive a quark-parton model of multiparticle production in which Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling at energies up to the CERN ISR results from the Bjorken scaling of quark longitudinal-momentum distribution functions in hadrons. KNO-scaling violation in total inclusive data at and above ISR energies is ascribed to the onset of gluon-gluon collisions as a new (rising) component of the total inelastic cross section. A new multiplicity formula is obtained, and excellent agreement is obtained for the KNO function and all moments of multiplicity distributions up to CERN Spp-barS Collider energies. Tentative predictions for the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and Superconducting Super Collider energy ranges are presented, and the uncertainties of such extrapolations discussed. We also discuss the question of KNO-scaling violation in non-single-diffractive as opposed to total inclusive data.
