Observation of an excited state of the [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +] baryon

An observation of an excited [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +*] baryon decaying to [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], with [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][r arrow][ital pK][sup [minus]][pi][sup +], is presented. We reconstruct 39.7[plus minus]8.7[Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +*] baryons with a mass of 340.4[plus minus]0.6[plus minus]0.3 MeV/[ital c][sup 2] above the [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +] mass. The upper limit on the resonant branching ratio is [ital B]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +*][r arrow][Sigma][sub [ital c]][pi][sup [plus minus]])/[ital B]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +*][r arrow][Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +] [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]])[lt]36% at the 90% confidence level.
