Giant oil fields of the world

Men have been finding giant oil fields (500 million bbl or more ultimate recovery) since 1865. Since that time, the world's population has increased from about 1.5 x 10U9D to almost 4 x 10U9D and the annual consumption of curde oil has increased from 3 x 10U6D to 16 x 10U9D bbl. In order to satisfy the projected demand for the future, we must search not just for new oil fields, but for new giant oil fields. From studies to date, a clear pattern can be seen. Most of the giant oil fields are found in Mesozoic and Tertiary reservoirs, and in anti- clinal traps. Most giant fields are in sandstone reservoirs, but the carbonate reservoirs of the giants contain the larger amount of oil. More giant oil fields are being found than ever before, but the average size seems to be decreasing somewhat. In the future, offshore areas will provide more giant oil fields than onshore areas. The steady improvement of techniques in seismic exploration, processing and interpretation, and in geological understanding, will allow the industry to find perhaps 200 to 300 more new giant oil fields.
