Although molybdate compounds have been used as corrosion inhibitors for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals for nearly 50 years, recent developments have added significantly to the authors understanding and use of molybdates. The low order of toxicity and non-polluting nature of molybdate salts has increased interest in molybdates as an alternative to chromate based cooling water corrosion inhibitors. The development of cost-effective, synergistic blends of molybdate with other corrosion inhibitors has further enhanced the use of molybdate based corrosion inhibitors. This paper summarizes development of molybdate cooling water treatment technology in the past 50 years. The chemistry and mechanism of corrosion inhibition of molybdates is discussed, followed by notes on the synergism of several other compounds in molybdate based formulations. A review of the improvements in molybdate programs, specifically Diol Technology, is also included. Some case history discussions outline the unique cost-effective performance characteristics of this state of the art technology.
